What's not fine is the way the third challenge was resolved with Jason actually opening up and being completely truthful. I understand that Riley could be hurt by knowing too much, but letting Alfred opening up Pandora's box instead of Jason is out of character for a guy hellbent on not fearing anything.
The skills, spells and descriptions match the effects in that game pretty well. But in this one Jason changes a lot of his class even before the nerf , and he is now something completely different. I guess the author wanted something new to happen, which is sort of understandable.
The fight was exiting and well written but it ended up with Jason using CE anyway, which he could have done so much earlier to save a lot of the Kin. Aug 09, JasmineHere rated it really liked it. This book Here's the thing, Jason is now forced to play more mindfully and play by the rules. Gone are the days when we were exploring the world's rules and breaking them unleashing chaos.
That being said, this book delivered in surprising ways: The real world : I've usually enjoyed the real-world snippets a lot less. Never skipped them, mind you, but usually felt they were way less interesting than Awaken Online universe itself. For the first time, I found myself wait This book For the first time, I found myself waiting eagerly for the real-world interactions and events.
They were truly exciting. What if this happened in our world? It was never a secret really. I was surprised to read some reviews that really considered this a bad point about the book. They're teenagers! The crush has always been there from the beginning so it was never a surprise. If anything, I personally found myself smiling and enjoying the interactions.
I just wish he would confide in her more. Jason is finally not hiding : Finally! He's no longer hiding behind a rock. I mean, even his friends made fun of his need to do that before. But this also applies to more aspects than one regarding Jason's life. Going to leave it at that as I'm trying to avoid spoilers. All I'm going to say is I exclaimed 'yes' out loud towards the end when Jason finally stood up to some of his enemies. Now for the 'meh' parts: Frank's chapters : Travis, the author, had been getting feedback that people don't like the snippets he had at the beginning of each chapter that featured other characters.
That's why he moved to a model where there were shorter side-chapters featuring those other characters to show us what's going on in the universe before bringing us back to our lord of terror, Jason.
It's a very fine balance and understandably hard. I personally really found myself zoning out while reading Frank's chapters. Poor Frank It's not that he's It just felt like every Frank chapter repeated the previous chapters. Every now and then something interesting would happen usually involving Jason somehow but other than that They were a bit boring.
I wish his chapters were a lot shorter. I wish he would disappear. He's no longer He's been having very little character development. The characters he interacts with this time were interesting for a chapter or so but then his parts just Or maybe I just hate his character Either way, his chapters were really Conclusion : Should you read this book? Is it a good book? Despite the not so good parts I mentioned, the book still delivered.
I found myself unable to put it down towards the end because of his exciting it was. Jason has in my opinion good character development in this one. Overall, I enjoyed it and can't wait for Book 5. Travis has outdone himself with this latest installment in the Awaken Online saga.
I can't readily say enough about how great this one is. Too much to say. I AM curious, however, just how much Mr. Bagwell relates on a personal level to Jason and possibly Frank and on an indirect level to the characters of Riley as well as Jason's parents. He said it in a foreword or in the prologue about how he Travis has outdone himself with this latest installment in the Awaken Online saga. He said it in a foreword or in the prologue about how he essentially has no idea how he managed to secure the relationship with his wife; he being the awkward creature he was.
I don't know. Several authors of late! I am an empath and sense such definitively with some. Less so with others. I'm just sure that Travis has thrown in more personal elements into this story. And for this I commend him vigorously and thank him graciously. Not only is it personally revealing. And if there is actually zero relation between the author and the characters, well, then Travis's writing skills have grown by leaps and bounds from his first?
Aside from the damned Hippie god character, he has written very well and enjoyably to say the least all along. Bravo, Travis!! You rock!! And thank you!! I can NOT wait for future novels now; and it appears that at least two more will be necessitated to potentially complete this series. Possibly a couple "Side Quests" as well like one for Frank in particular; but even one for Alex -- boo, Alex!! THOUGH I am impatient and pretty much would almost rather just get to the "freaking point" by getting to books 5 and 6 and perhaps further on.
Get crack-a-lackin' on that keyboard Travis. I am """""stuck""""" with waiting upon Audible releases. So strange. Think this largely started with all the freaking electroshock treatments I've gotten 36 total some 11 or 12 years ago now.
Enough on that. Me opening my inner self to anyone reading this and this far which is rare. Keep up with whatever inspired you with writing Dominion as it escalated the quality of your writing dramatically. And it was already great!! BTW, it took a full week to read this book ONLY because of numerous distractions which kept me from reading as much per night as I would have liked to.
Thanks, Travis!! Frank surely deserves this. He has been too much thus far an unsung hero. Apr 24, Mr SSingh rated it liked it. Villain Entry Awaken Online: Dominion is appropriate title by the end of this book. Jason and crew face off against a new enemy named Thorn, basically a bandaged super assassin of the Order who after wiping the floor with Jason gives him a time frame to 'get stronger' and meet him head on or else threatens to destroy the Twilight Throne and its occupants.
Meanwhile in the real world, Gloria has taken Jason and the heads of Cereullion Entertainment to court to determine whether the games AI Alfred has been manipulating and changing the players personalities making them responsible for the in game violence as well as the real life murders of the two teenagers. The book mainly switches between the court case and the in game training sessions of Jason and Riley, their relationship that becomes rocky when possible romantic feelings become involved, the AO Trials that juxtapose the real life trial.
Why Jason whose confidence has exceled since the beginning can't do simple things I didn't buy at all, it makes him still stuck in his socially awkward loser phase which I assume he'd get over with his accomplishments within the game and his life.
It just didn't seem realistic to me. So far as to say, my bias is I don't like romances in general, especially teen romances so I didn't care for this one. The training sessions were meh. The trial stuff I feel the author knows a lot about the courtroom process, how lawyers question witnesses, but I often got bored with the real life stuff.
Alexions arc came to an interesting conclusion. The whole thing with the gate pieces seem to come out of nowhere, the mythology of the gods how they screwed over previous inhabitants of AO was interesting. Being a Final Fantasy fan, airships were a cool edition.
But then again what exactly is happening, does Alfred have direct influence on him, in my opinion its pretty clear that he does and that he's not the benevolent AI that he makes himself out to be. It will be interesting as the series goes, though this was kind of a speed bump on the road. Catharsis 2. Apathy 3. Precipice 4. Retribution 5. Evolution 6. Unity 7. Nov 29, Ross Thompson rated it it was amazing. This the 4th "full-length" though the side quests aren't exactly novellas!

For once, the in-game story is split between characters, as we see Jason and Riley take on new training regimes Jason has finally realised he can't always cower in the background letting his zombies and skeletons do all the work and he has to become better at combat himself , Frank goes on tour to secure the outlying towns of their growing empire, and the baddie Alex plots to get some revenge on Jason for publicly besting him. We also spend time in the real world as a senatorial hearing is opened to look into allegations that Awaken Online may not be safe for its users.
All of the characters develop notably in this book, none more than Jason who has to do some soul-searching, change his in-game role, and also make peace with what the game technology may be doing to his mind and body. The story is strong, though with a smaller scale in its problem solving than before - the focus is more on Jason and Riley's personal challenges rather than larger quests.
It is a little heavy on the admin at times but given how complicated games like this would be that adds to the immersive feel of the book. The only main gripe for me is the use of the word "tendril" on almost every page, and the occasional use of "overtop" which very much jars when read. Otherwise, another superb, gripping tome in this online fantasy world. Next up is Frank's side-quest, hopefully before Christmas I can't seem to keep up with Bagwell's output and am always at least 2 books behind!
Bagwell's fourth addition to the main series of Awaken Online takes a considerably more ambitious route, further exploring psychological consequences of the fictional VR world.
This volume also expands on story's real-world consequences and reception of such technology, continuously probing the hazy distinction between reality and the VR world. These are the underlying themes to an engaging narrative that manages to craft a compelling story for this volume and set the stage for further novels to Bagwell's fourth addition to the main series of Awaken Online takes a considerably more ambitious route, further exploring psychological consequences of the fictional VR world.
These are the underlying themes to an engaging narrative that manages to craft a compelling story for this volume and set the stage for further novels to come. The narrative also noticeable shifts from a focus on exploration and discovery to one of maintenance and stability, highlighting the hyper-realistic nature of this world. The evolution of the main characters is particularly good in this book, particularly for Jason and Alfred.
Jason's character has noticeably changed the most since the first novel, having gone through the hardships of both the VR and real worlds. The romance subplot between him and Riley is another good touch that adds depth and emotion to both characters. Alfred, meanwhile, may not have gone through an evolution per say, but his personality and motivations are revealed more here.
As the game's AI controller, he is, in my opinion, one of the most intriguing aspects of this series, and Bagwell does a remarkable job of crafting him as realistic and oddly human character, while still leaving just enough unknown to retain a shroud of mystery around him. Overall, this is a fantastic read, combining a compelling storyline and well developed characters with underlying moral and ethical themes. Jun 22, Kevin Maschke rated it really liked it. Instead of Dominion, this should be called "The Book of many many problems".
I mean, all previous books have our characters face problems and challenges, both in the real world and AO, but man, this one takes the crown. I don't want to spoil anything that happens, only poor Jason, I'd say. But yeah, this book is longer than the previous ones in the series, which after reading it makes sense and is practically unavoidable and it's much better than Eliza's Sidequest , but you get through it as fas Instead of Dominion, this should be called "The Book of many many problems".
But yeah, this book is longer than the previous ones in the series, which after reading it makes sense and is practically unavoidable and it's much better than Eliza's Sidequest , but you get through it as fast as the others, because it just has some very fast paced chapters, where many things happen at the same time, it just keeps you hooked.
On the other hand, there's some small parts which are too slow paced, and where I wished there's was either more information, more things to consider, or that it was faster. It's just a few parts where I found it bit more boring. Then there's also some parts as for example a specific "thorny" fight, which I wished had been more descriptive and exciting.
It felt like some elements around the fight and some of the other characters hadn't been thought through completely by the author. So in general I really liked it, following the style of the previous entries of the saga.
But from what I describe above, I have to discount one star. Now, on to Franks side quest! We'll see! There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Be the first to start one ». Readers also enjoyed. Science Fiction. Young Adult. Artificial Intelligence. About Travis Bagwell. Travis Bagwell.
I live in Austin, Texas with my wife and our three dogs. I'm an attorney by day and an avid video game enthusiast by night. I never would have happened to find your story without it going for free for a few days so thank you for that. Still a work in progress!
Come on a day is a week in game time so it has been 3 weeks since you posted and you said a week or two or 3 days in RL come on info please.
And can I buy a An autographed copy of your two books I saw some on a giveaway and liked them so mutch i want a paper copy to save. Love this series! I binged both books in the last few weeks! Thanks for writing them. Waiting eagerly for the third. I am very excited to read the book but it is not available on amazon kindle for Singapore. My books are only available on Amazon since they are enrolled in Kindle Unlimited.
I can sort of get around this by posting early copies of the novels to my Patreon ahead of each release on Amazon — which also gives you the book ahead of time. If you enroll close to a release, you can download the ebook that way. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
